Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: Which Do You Actually Need?

After a tree comes down, there's still a stump sitting in your yard. Tree companies will quote you on two very different services for dealing with it, and they're priced very differently. Here's what each one actually means and which one you probably want.

Stump grinding (what 95% of homeowners need)

A specialized grinder with a rotating cutting wheel chews the stump down to 6–12 inches below grade. The hole is backfilled with the resulting wood chips (or topsoil if you'd prefer to seed it), grass grows over it within a season, and within a year you'll forget there was ever a tree there.

Grinding is faster, cheaper, and far less invasive. No torn-up yard, no heavy equipment digging trenches across your lawn, no damaged surrounding tree roots. For most stumps we're in and out in under an hour.

The remaining ground-down roots stay in the soil and decompose naturally over 5–10 years. They don't regrow — grinding the stump well below grade kills the cambium, and without a stump or any leaves, the root system has no way to send up new shoots.

Full stump removal (when you actually need it)

Full removal means excavating the stump and the major root ball whole. It's invasive — large hole, disturbed turf, and almost always damaged roots on any nearby trees. It's also significantly more expensive because of the labor and equipment time.

You only need full removal in two scenarios:

1. You're putting a structure exactly where the stump was — a deck footing, pool, foundation, or anything that requires undisturbed soil at depth.
2. You're planting a new tree in the exact same spot. The old root ball will physically interfere with the new tree's roots and can also harbor decay fungi that attack the replacement.

Our recommendation

For everything else — lawn restoration, garden beds, walkways nearby — grinding is the right answer. Cheaper, cleaner, and prevents regrowth just as effectively as full removal. We grind stumps as a standalone service or bundled with the original removal at a discount.
